India welcomed 7.5m visitors in 2014

India welcomed 7.46 million international visitors in 2014, an increase of 7.1% compared to the 6.97m welcomed last year.

According to the latest figures released by the country’s Ministry of Tourism & Culture, a further 877,000 overseas visitors arrived in the country in December 2014, 6.8% more than the same month in 2013.

The USA was India’s largest visitor source market in December, accounting for 17.6% of the total, followed by the UK (11.4%), Bangladesh (10.2%), Canada (4.8%) and Australia (4.8%).

In terms of tourism receipts, India generated US$19.66 billion in the full year 2014, 6.6% more than the US$18.45bn taken in 2013.

And India will be hoping to continue its growth in the coming years, following the launch of a series of tourism-friendly policies by Narendra Modi’s new government. This includes the expansion of the country’s visa-on-arrival policy to more countries and a greater number of arrival points.
