Taiwan attracting affluent Chinese visitors to boost Taiwanese economy

Taiwan is one of the most popular destinations for Chinese tourists. The island will soon start a visa scheme to draw high spending visitors from China. Under the new visa programme, the visitors will have direct flights to Taipei, and will be housed in four-stars and above rated hotels. They will also participate in better quality food and services, and shopping is 100-per cent voluntary.

The number of Chinese visitors bound for Taiwan has surged almost fourfold to nearly 3.5 million since 2008. That makes up 44 per cent of all tourists in Taiwan.

Deputy director general of Tourism Bureau, Wayne Liu, said: “Starting from April 1, high-end quality tours in groups will be launched with a daily quota of 300 persons, or a maximum of 5,000 per month. What we hope is to boost their average spending on better products so as to lift the quality of the island’s tourism sector.”
