India’s domestic air traffic grows 18% in May




As per a Business Standard report, air traffic in India rose 18.35 per cent in May on a year-on-year basis, and IndiGo retained its No. 1 position amongst domestic airlines growing its market share to 38.9 per cent.

In May, domestic airlines flew 7.1 million passengers as against six million in the same month last year. May is the peak season for leisure travel and all airlines reported growth in occupancy over the previous month.

SpiceJet reported the highest load factor of 93.1 per cent followed by IndiGo (91.9 per cent) and GoAir (89 per cent). Vistara's loads too improved from 67 per cent in April to 71 per cent in May.

Vistara topped the list for on-time performance with 98.5 per cent punctuality record followed by AirAsia, Jet and IndiGo all of which reported punctuality between 80-86 per cent. Vistara and AirAsia also reported zero cancellations in the month.

Propelled by summer bookings domestic air travel surges by 18.35 per cent: DGCA

Driven by the summer bookings, domestic air travel surged by a healthy 18.35 per cent in April over the same period last year, while budget carrier IndiGo continued its market domination with more than a third of the total traffic pie in the kitty.

All Indian carriers together ferried a total of 71.27 lakh passengers in May as compared to 60.22 lakh passengers during May 2014, according to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data for the month.

During May, another budget airline SpiceJet clocked the highest seat factor at 93.1 per cent helped by a series of low-fare schemes, announced by the carrier in the previous month.

Yoga to be performed mid-air on select SpiceJet flights





Budget carrier SpiceJet has teamed up with Isha Foundation of Sadhguru to conduct mid-air yoga sessions on some of its Boeing flights on Sunday.

SpiceJet crew and the Isha Foundation instructors will perform Upa Yoga at a height of 35,000 feet on June 21, the International Yoga Day.

According to the airline, approximately 50 dedicated Isha instructors and SpiceJet crew members, who have been specially trained to perform Upa Yoga, will undertake a 10-minute session onboard select Boeing flights across the SpiceJet network.

Air India to promote yoga mid-air


























To promote International Yoga Day mid-air, state-run carrier Air India will on June 21 show a film on yoga across its flights, along with special in-flight announcement. Starting Sunday, the airline will hold the celebrations mid-air for the entire week, besides, conducting specific yoga and meditation courses during the period to mark the global event.

Air Pegasus to launch Bengaluru-Madurai flight from June 26





BENGALURU: Low-cost carrier Air Pegasus today said it is set to launch thrice-a-week flight to Madurai from here from June 26.

With the announcement, Air Pegasus is taking its footprint to the fourth city in South India in less than three months after its first launch in April, the company said in a release.

Since April, Air Pegasus has launched its flight service to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Hubballi in Karnataka and Cudappah in Andhra Pradesh, it said.

"As the third largest city of Tamil Nadu after Chennai and Coimbatore, the new flight service is set to add significant value to the economy of Madurai, which is also called as the Athens of the East for its cultural heritage. Moreover, we are the sole operator to Madurai from Bangalore," Air Pegasus Managing Director Shyson Thomas said.

IATA supports India on changing norms for flying international, stresses on bilateral air services rights


MIAMI: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has supported India's move to abolish the international flying eligibility norms despite opposition from Air India and Jet Airways, the association's members from the country.

The difference of opinion among various stakeholders notwithstanding, it is important to look at the big picture, IATA director general and chief executive Tony Tyler said on the sidelines of the association's annual general meeting in Miami. "India has a lot of bilateral air services rights that have not been utilised. The government needs to take a holistic view and work towards increasing the utilisation of these rights by Indian carriers.

South African Airways focusing on improving inter-connectivity in Africa





South African Airways (SAA) is focusing on growing its African network and improving inter-connectivity on the continent. Nico Bezuidenhout, Acting Chief Executive, South African Airways, emphasised at the recently concluded IATA Annual General Meeting in Miami, the airline’s determination to bring its premium service to more and more destinations in Africa, as per a release.

“Our goal is to increase our revenue in the region by 30 per cent in the next 12 months. Africa is a huge-potential market for aviation and as Africa’s legacy airline, we want to see the continent contribute to more than the current three per cent of global aviation,” said Bezuidenhout.

Starting August 3, 2015, SAA will be providing the only non-stop flight between Ghana and Washington D.C., as well as the only Skytrax 4-Star rated airline service and world-class quality from the entire West Africa region to North America.

To improve inter-connectivity on the continent, SAA entered into a bilateral code-share agreement with Africa World Airlines. This airline partnership will offer SAA customers from Washington and Johannesburg seamless connectivity via Accra to other destinations in Ghana such as Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale as well as to Lagos, Nigeria.
